With the serious COVID-19 health and social distancing concerns, hosting an in-person conference this year and putting members, presenters, and staff at risk was a non-starter. The COVID-19 pandemic is challenging public health in unprecedented ways, and is exposing structural failures and health inequities that further exasperate the impact of the virus. As the nation continues to grapple with the ongoing pandemic, the Network has joined with public health law partners to produce an expansive report, Pandemic Policymaking: Assessing Legal Responses to COVID-19, that includes critical analyses and recommendations from national experts convened to assess the U.S. policy response to the crisis to date.

Many of these experts will present their key findings at this virtual Summit, and propose paths forward to more effective and equitable response and recovery efforts.

Workings of the General Assembly during the COVID-19 pandemic

The General Assembly, led by its President, has been carrying out its work via novel means to guarantee business continuity and mitigate the spread of the disease.

Year in year out, every September, Member States have met in the General Assembly Hall at Headquarters in New York for the annaul session and its highly visible general debate. The modalities of the 75th session will however differ in light of the global health crisis.

As we head toward a new decade and set our sights on achieving Healthy People 2030 goals, it’s critical that we create opportunities for engagement across public health disciplines, practice areas, and organizations/agencies. To that end, NACCHO is expanding our 2020 annual conference into a two-pronged convening, NACCHO 360: Raising the Reach of Public Health, which will feature:

• NACCHO Annual, the premier public health conference where local health department staff, partners, and funders share the latest research, ideas, strategies and innovations across public health focus areas, and

• PHIITS: Public Health Informatics, Information Technology, and Surveillance, a reimagined Public Health Informatics Conference that goes beyond informatics to also explore local health department information technology infrastructure and public health surveillance.
