National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month 2020
June is National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month (#MHAM), and the headache, migraine and cluster communities are working together to gain awareness and recognition of headache disorder as a legitimate neurobiological disease, to encourage those with headache or migraine to see a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment, and to let individuals with headache disorder know that there are new treatments available.
For 2020, the following days will be observed as special Recognition Days during the month of June.
June 1 – Wear Purple to Work (at Home): Choose your favorite purple shirt or accessory and wear it on June 1, 2020. Share your photo on social and tag @nationalheadachefoundation and add the hashtags #MHAM and #MHAM2020
June 1 – Shine Purple on Migraine Awareness: Help increase awareness by changing your porch light to a purple bulb during June. The CMA is asking our community to use #MHAM and #ShineALight when you share your light photos on social media. Additionally, requests have been made to venues across the country to change their outdoor lighting to purple starting on June 1, 2020.
June 1 – Migraine at Work
June 6 – D DAY Veterans with Headache Disease
June 7 – Remembrance Day, Honoring Those We’ve Lost
June 17 – 25 – Miles for Migraine Virtual Walk/Run/Relax: Lace up your shoes or set up for your perfect day of at home relaxation in support of headache and migraine disease awareness. From June 17 – 25, Miles for Migraine is asking everyone to take part in the virtual 2020 Chicago event! Participants can still register and fundraise in support of the Loyola Headache Center. Awards will be given to the biggest fundraiser, three people who upload a photo of their participation on their social handles and tag Miles for Migraine, and three people who upload their results via the online tool.
June 21 – Father’s Day, Headache Disease in Men
June 29 – Chronic Migraine Awareness Day: The CMA and their mascot Rally want you to request your Rally Pack, share your photos with your Rally gear and use #RallyAgainstChronicMigraine to help us raise awareness.
June 21 – Migraine Solidarity Day: Led by the Association of Migraine Disorders, we want you to put on your favorite pair of sunglasses and take a picture. Share it on your social channels with #ShadesForMigraine and challenge three of your friends to participate!
Chronic migraine is defined as headache on 15 or more days a month for at least three months having the features of migraine headache on at least 8 days of month (1). Individuals with chronic migraine often experience migraines that are more severe and longer lasting even with medication (3). Chronic migraine poses a greater impact on the patient’s life than episodic migraine, including lower household income levels, less ability to do chores, and more missed workdays (4). Migraine is the 3rd most common medical problem in the world (5) and the 7th most disabling of all medical conditions (5,6).
